Continuous Product Quality Audit

Client Brief

A major FMCG multinational in the food and personal care categories engaged with Eolas
International to measure the quality of its range of consumer products on sale in
supermarkets across twelve European countries. In addition, they wanted to benchmark their
product quality against that of their main competitors.

Research Solution

Initially Eolas International worked closely with the client to develop a range of quality
standards which were applicable to their various packaging technologies. These standards
detailed the acceptable quality levels for issues such as packaging opening device, label
adhesion, package scratches/scuffing and product contamination. Four Irish based Eolas
International researchers completed a comprehensive training programme on the client's
product quality standards. They then visited the twelve European countries, covering over
800 supermarkets assessing an average of 70 products per store. The data was sent daily to
our offices for instant analysis and reporting. The final reports contained concise data with
actionable recommendations.

Project Outcome

The client focused on high occurrence issues and targeted both production improvements at
manufacturing facilities and some quality improvements in the distribution chain. The client
also had a series of meetings with one retail chain where results on their products were
consistently lower on a pan-Euro basis. The client has now commissioned Eolas International
to carry out annual quality audits across Europe so that they can create improvement
programmes based on the initial benchmark data. In addition, they can maintain a constant
watch on competitor product quality and innovation and ensure that they maintain a
competitive advantage.
